The Lost City of Dwarka – Part 3 - The Fall of the Yadava Dynasty and the Submergence of Dwarka

If Dwarka was so magnificently planned—with towering golden palaces, immense wealth, impenetrable fortifications, and the guidance of Lord Krishna himself—how did such a glorious empire come to an end? Was it destroyed by a catastrophic natural disaster alone, or was its downfall foretold by an ancient curse?

According to the Mahabharata and the Puranas, the destruction of Dwarka began long before the sea swallowed the city. It began with the destruction of the Yadava dynasty itself. After the great Kurukshetra War, the world expected peace to prevail. But the seeds of another tragedy had already been sown.

The first turning point came through Gandhari, the grieving mother of the Kauravas. After witnessing the bodies of her hundred sons lying on the battlefield, her heart was shattered. Filled with sorrow and anger, she confronted Lord Krishna. She said that although Krishna possessed the power to prevent the terrible war, he had chosen not to intervene. Overwhelmed by grief, she pronounced a devastating curse:

"Just as my sons destroyed one another and my entire lineage came to an end, after thirty-six years your Yadava dynasty will also perish in the same way. Your people will destroy each other, and your magnificent city of Dwarka will disappear beneath the sea."

Krishna accepted the curse with complete calmness. He neither protested nor attempted to change destiny. According to the scriptures, he already knew that the purpose of his earthly incarnation was nearing its end. Thirty-six years passed. Gradually, the once-disciplined Yadava clan became arrogant and intoxicated with power. Pride replaced wisdom, and harmony slowly gave way to recklessness. Around this time, the great sages Vishwamitra, Narada, and Kanva visited Dwarka. Instead of showing them respect, a group of mischievous Yadava youths decided to mock them.

They disguised Samba, Krishna's son, as a pregnant woman by tying an iron object beneath his clothes. Then they approached the sages with a sarcastic question:

"O great sages, tell us—what child will this woman give birth to?"

Realizing they were being insulted, the sages became furious. They declared - "She will give birth to an iron pestle, and that very pestle will bring about the complete destruction of your entire Yadava dynasty."

Terrified, the youths removed the disguise and discovered that the iron object had indeed transformed into a solid iron pestle, just as the sages had foretold. When King Ugrasena learned of the curse, he ordered the iron pestle to be ground into fine powder and thrown into the sea, believing the danger had been eliminated. But destiny could not be avoided. The iron fragments washed ashore near Prabhasa, close to present-day Somnath, where they transformed into sharp reeds that appeared like ordinary grass but were as hard and deadly as iron. Soon afterward, strange omens began appearing throughout Dwarka. Unusual eclipses darkened the sky, daylight turned eerily dim, and many unsettling signs convinced Krishna that the final chapter had begun.

He instructed the Yadavas to leave Dwarka temporarily and travel to the sacred shores of Prabhasa, hoping they would spend time peacefully away from the city.

However, what happened there fulfilled both Gandhari's curse and the prophecy of the sages. During their stay, many of the Yadavas became intoxicated after consuming alcohol. A minor disagreement quickly escalated into a violent quarrel. In their drunken rage, brothers turned against brothers, fathers against sons, and friends against friends.Weapons were drawn, and a brutal civil war erupted.

When their weapons were exh austed, they tore up the iron-like reeds growing nearby—the very reeds born from the cursed iron pestle—and used them as deadly clubs. The reeds became instruments of destruction, killing countless warriors within hours.

The mighty Yadava dynasty, which had once stood unmatched in strength and glory, annihilated itself on the shores of Prabhasa.

Watching these tragic events unfold, Lord Krishna understood that his earthly mission had come to its destined conclusion.

His elder brother, Balarama, entered deep yogic meditation and peacefully departed from the mortal world.

Krishna then walked into the nearby forest and rested beneath a tree.

At that very moment, a hunter named Jara noticed Krishna's foot partially hidden among the bushes. Mistaking it for a deer, he released an arrow. The arrow struck Krishna's foot. Realizing his mistake, Jara rushed forward, overcome with sorrow, and begged for forgiveness. Krishna smiled gently and comforted him, explaining that everything had happened according to divine will and that the hunter was merely an instrument of destiny. With Krishna's departure, the era of Dwapara Yuga came to an end.

Arjuna arrived in Dwarka to rescue the surviving women and children and escort them safely to Hastinapura.

But the moment they left the city, nature unleashed its final act. Behind them, the Arabian Sea—calm for countless generations—suddenly surged beyond its shores. Towering waves rose into the sky and crashed upon the magnificent city. Within moments, the golden palaces, majestic temples, broad avenues, and mighty fortifications disappeared beneath the sea. Before Arjuna's eyes, the legendary Golden City of Dwarka vanished forever into the depths of the Arabian Sea, leaving behind only memories, legends, and mysteries waiting to be rediscovered.

This is the account preserved in the Mahabharata and the Vishnu Purana. But an important question remains:

Could an entire city really disappear beneath the sea so suddenly?

To answer that, we must turn from mythology to modern oceanography, geology, and climate science—where scientific evidence attempts to explain how such a catastrophic event may have occurred. This is where the next chapter of the Dwarka mystery truly begins.
